How to Build a Curly Hair Routine From Scratch: The Beginner's Blueprint

Why You Need a Routine — Not Just Products

If you've been buying product after product hoping something will fix your curls, stop. Products are ingredients, but routine is the recipe. Without a consistent, structured approach, even the best products won't perform at their best. Building a routine means understanding what your hair needs, when it needs it, and in what order to deliver it.

Phase 1 — Know Your Hair

Before you buy a single product, answer these four questions:

  • What is my curl type? (2A–4C)
  • What is my hair porosity? (Low, normal, or high)
  • What is my hair density? (Fine, medium, or thick)
  • What are my biggest current complaints? (Dryness, frizz, breakage, no definition?)

These four answers guide every product choice from here.

Phase 2 — Build Your Core Product Routine

A complete curly hair routine has four layers:

  • Cleanse: Sulphate-free shampoo or co-wash to clean without stripping
  • Condition: Rinse-out conditioner on every wash, deep conditioner weekly
  • Moisturise: Leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair immediately post-shower
  • Style & Seal: Curl cream, gel, foam, or a combination to define, hold, and protect

Get these four working first before adding anything else.

Phase 3 — Create a Weekly Schedule

  • 1–2x per week: Full wash day (cleanse, condition, deep condition, style)
  • 2–3x per week: Refresh with a water spritz and small amount of leave-in or cream
  • Every night: Pineapple or loose bun with a silk scrunchie or satin bonnet
  • Once a month: Protein treatment as needed

Phase 4 — Troubleshoot and Adjust

Give any new routine at least 4–6 weeks before judging it. Common early issues and quick fixes:

  • Curls aren't defining: Try applying products to wetter hair, or add a gel layer
  • Hair feels dry by day 2: Increase deep conditioner frequency or try a more humectant-rich leave-in
  • Product buildup and scalp itch: Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to reset
  • No volume: Apply products upside down and diffuse rather than air drying flat

You don't need 15 products or to follow every trend online. The most transformative curl routines are often the simplest ones, done consistently. Find your core four, master the technique, and build from there.
