How to Fight Frizz for Good: The Root Causes and Real Solutions

Why Curly Hair Is Prone to Frizz

Frizz isn't a flaw — it's your hair communicating. Curly and coily hair has a spiral structure that makes it difficult for natural sebum to travel from root to tip, meaning curls are almost always drier than straight hair. Dry, thirsty hair reaches out for moisture from the surrounding air — and that absorption causes the cuticle to swell and lift, creating frizz. Humidity makes this worse, but it's far from the only cause.

The Main Causes of Curly Hair Frizz

  • Lack of hydration: Dry hair is frizzy hair. If your moisture routine isn't working, frizz will follow.
  • Disrupting the curl clump: Touching or scrunching while drying breaks curl clusters apart and leaves flyaways.
  • Terry cloth towels: The rough fibres roughen up the hair cuticle instantly.
  • Applying products on damp rather than wet hair: Uneven product distribution leads to uneven drying and frizz.
  • No sealant layer: Without a gel or oil on top, moisture escapes freely all day.
  • Damaged cuticles: Heat, colour, and chemical damage leave the cuticle permanently raised.

The Anti-Frizz Toolkit

Gels are one of the most effective anti-frizz tools. A good curl gel forms a cast around each curl clump as it dries, locking the cuticle flat. Don't be afraid of the crunchy gel cast — once hair is fully dry, scrunch it gently to reveal soft, defined, frizz-free curls underneath.

Oils seal with a light oil (argan, jojoba, sweet almond) as a final step, locking moisture in and preventing atmospheric moisture from entering the cuticle. Apply sparingly to avoid weighing curls down.

Glycerin is a humectant that draws moisture from the air into the hair. It works brilliantly in moderate humidity — but in very high or very low humidity climates, it can work against you.

Technique Changes That Eliminate Frizz

  • Apply all products on soaking wet hair immediately after rinsing conditioner
  • Scrunch upwards toward the scalp to encourage curl clumping
  • Do not touch hair at all while it's drying
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce overnight friction
  • Pineapple your hair at night — a loose high ponytail preserves curl shape while you sleep

Once hair is completely dry, flip forward and gently scrunch out the gel cast using your hands or a small amount of oil. This is the moment frizz-free, soft, bouncy curls are revealed.
