The Ultimate Guide to Your Curl Type: How to Finally Understand Your Hair

Why Your Curl Type Matters More Than You Think

If you've ever felt like you were doing everything right — diffusing, scrunching, plopping — but still not getting the defined curls you see online, the problem might not be your technique. It might be that you're using products designed for a completely different curl type than yours.

Understanding your curl pattern is the single most important step towards a haircare routine that actually works. Once you know what you're working with, every product choice and styling decision becomes clearer. So let's break it all down.

The Curl Type System Explained

The most widely used system categorises curls from Type 2 (wavy) through to Type 4 (coily/kinky), with subcategories A, B, and C within each number. Here's what each one looks like:

2A — Loose, gentle S-waves with minimal volume. Hair tends to be fine and can fall flat easily.

2B — More defined S-waves that start at the mid-length, prone to frizz at the crown.

2C — Strong, thick waves bordering on ringlets. Can experience significant frizz in humidity.

3A — Big, loose ringlets with a springy, shiny texture.

3B — Tighter, more voluminous ringlets with a well-defined spiral pattern.

3C — Tight corkscrew curls packed closely together. High-volume and full of texture.

4A — Defined S-pattern coils, soft and dense. Retains moisture better than looser types.

4B — Z-shaped pattern with sharp angles. Naturally shrinks significantly when dry.

4C — The most tightly coiled pattern, with almost no defined curl when dry. Incredibly versatile.

How to Identify Your Curl Type at Home

Always identify your curl type on freshly washed, product-free hair. Let it air dry completely without touching it, then assess your natural pattern. You may find you have two or even three curl types on your head — this is completely normal. The nape of your neck often has a tighter curl pattern than the top of your head. Embrace the mix and cater your routine to your most dominant type.

Products Your Curl Type Actually Needs

Wavy hair (2A–2C) tends to get weighed down easily, so lightweight formulas are your best friend. Light leave-in conditioners, mousses, and foams enhance without dragging waves down.

Curly hair (3A–3C) needs a balance of moisture and hold. A leave-in conditioner paired with a curl cream or gel will define ringlets and combat frizz.

Coily hair (4A–4C) craves moisture above everything else. Rich creams, butters, and oils are your staples — the tighter the coil, the harder it is for natural sebum to travel down the hair shaft.
